ELIMINATING HAZARDOUS WASTE

The jar at left contains used acetone; the middle and right jars show the result of our on-site distillation. The clean acetone (middle) is reused, and the distilled solids (right) are burnt in a kiln to create cement powder.

REPURPOSE

Geiger participates in rePurpose, a program developed by Herman Miller to reclaim and reuse unwanted furniture and other office assets. The items go to deserving nonprofits, and the earth doesn't get waste that would otherwise clog landfills.

THE NATURE OF GEIGER

At Geiger, we have a clear vision of our place in the world of tomorrow. In it, the culture of disposability and waste is unthinkable. Social, economic and environmental drivers affect decision making in equal measure. And businesses demand environmentally sound products not only because they make good economic sense, but because they make good human sense.

For our part, Geiger is building an infrastructure that preserves and enhances economic vitality and environmental health across all of our activities, today and tomorrow. Guided by the "Perfect Vision" initiative established by our parent company Herman Miller, Geiger has committed to a set of dramatic sustainability targets, all directed toward a single aim: zero environmental footprint by 2020. It's an aggressive goal and every day, Geiger moves closer to making it real. Here is where we are today.

PERFECT VISION 2020 GOALS

Zero landfill
Zero hazardous waste generation
Zero air emissions
Zero process water use
100 percent green electrical energy use
Company buildings constructed to minimum LEED Silver
100 percent of sales from DfE-approved products

ZERO LANDFILL

Over the years, Geiger's comprehensive recycling program achieved a dramatic drop in solid waste sent to landfills, from 112 tons per month in 2005 to just 12 tons a month in 2008. In 2009, Geiger instituted a program to send the remaining trash that could not be recycled to a waste-to-energy facility, which converts the waste to steam energy. This energy helps power Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, the home of NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. As a result, Geiger's primary manufacturing facility in Atlanta now sends zero manufacturing waste to landfills.

AIR EMISSIONS

Starting in 1988, Geiger participated in a voluntary initiative piloted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. The goal was to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 1995; Geiger exceeded the goal, reducing emissions by 81 percent. Today, Geiger continues to reduce emissions, though the initiative officially has ended.

Geiger manufactures many GREENGUARD-certified products, including wood seating; Geiger Levels casegoods; Tablet casegoods with the GREENGUARD finish package; and Caucus conference furniture with the GREENGUARD finish and materials package, at no additional cost. All Geiger GREENGUARD-certified products also comply with the ANSI/BIFMA x7.1-2007/m7.1-2007 standard. For the most current list of certified products, visit www.greenguard.org. In addition, no-added-formaldehyde (NAF) board is available upon request.

100 PERCENT GREEN ELECTRICAL ENERGY

As part of Herman Miller, Geiger operations are powered entirely by green electrical energy. All energy used is harnessed from resources such as sunlight, wind or water flow and placed into the electrical grid.

FSC CERTIFICATION

In 2009, Geiger's Atlanta facility earned FSC Chain of Custody Certification (FSC license number: FSC C002041). Now, in addition to Geiger's longstanding practice of using only woods harvested from well-managed forests, Geiger is also an FSC Supplier of casegoods that can be specified with optional FSC-certified veneers and core materials.
